Our practices are founded in regenerative agriculture to facilitate soil revitalization and repair the ecosystem of Vermont’s Champlain Valley. The 400-acre property is used for a mixture of activities and operations including: fruit, vegetable and flower production; a diversified livestock and haying operation; and a growing food service and hospitality program. We are in our fourth year of production at the farm, and beginning our second calendar year of operating an on-farm market, production kitchen, event space and processing facility located in the Farm Commons Barn.

The Farm Commons Barn is our primary point of connection with our community and guests, providing an outlet for all that we grow and raise on our farm. We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in a casual yet welcoming counter-service style. Alongside seated farm meals, our retail Market includes prepared and value-added foods, a coffee program, in-house butcher shop, and fresh farm produce year round. Additionally, we are securing our 1st Class Liquor License and developing a beer and wine program to compliment our existing foodservice offerings. Beyond our farm products, the Market sells a selection of grocery and specialty housewares that highlight and support Vermont's artisans. In combination with our adjacent terrace, outdoor event space, and restored historic farmhouse, the Farm Commons Barn hosts educational workshops, meetings, fundraisers, and events that further the conversation around food while providing fun and engaging activities for our community.

Position Overview

The Food & Beverage Manager is responsible for all aspects of food and beverage operations at Philo Ridge Farm, including our market, food service, beer and wine service, special event coordination, and all guest related activities. This includes all Back of House (BOH) and Front of House (FOH) staff management and leadership; providing unsurpassed hospitality and guest experience; curating and serving the products grown on the farm and prepared in the kitchen; as well as overseeing the sourcing and selling of our various market products by the Market Manager. The Food & Beverage Manager is also responsible for overseeing all product inventory, the maintenance of all Farm Commons Barn facilities & equipment, and working in conjunction with the Head Chef and Market Manager on the sales and financial performance of the food service program.

The Food & Beverage Manager will directly supervise the Head Chef, Market Manager and Events Manager; and will support the Head Chef and Market Manager in supervising all FOH and BOH personnel to achieve strong results in each of these areas. The Food & Beverage Manager also works closely with the senior leadership team to create a cohesive leadership presence that supports the Philo Ridge Farm mission statement, service mission, and core values.


Primary Responsibilities

  • The Food & Beverage Manager will be responsible for the management, leadership and development of the Market Manager, Head Chef and Events Manager, while supporting broader FOH and BOH staff development and team building

  • Responsible for the hiring, training, development and evaluation of FOH and BOH staff, including consistent leadership and mentorship to develop and grow the team.

  • Provide continuous communication, leadership and training to the team through daily staff line-ups, monthly team meetings and other formats as needed. Impartially and consistently hold employees accountable to all company standards and practices, evaluating and/or following disciplinary procedure when necessary.

  • The Food & Beverage Manager will be responsible for actively demonstrating, teaching, and leading our staff in giving great service everyday

  • Exemplify professionalism, a positive attitude, integrity, and mentor team members in developing and strengthening relationships with our guests, vendors, and each other.

  • Lead and train the team in providing consistently outstanding guest experience, including how to curate an experience that is unique to each guest, handle and resolve guest complaints, and empower team members to make real-time service improvements.

  • Celebrate the Philo Ridge Farm story. Speak with passion and knowledge about our food and products to all of the guests that visit the market. 

  • The Food & Beverage Manager will be responsible for all foodservice operations

  • Responsible for regular meetings with Market Manager and Head Chef regarding consistency in food quality, food costs and menu change and direction.

  • Collaborates with the Board and Senior Leadership Team in the review of the a la carte food service product mix, the beverage program, and the selection of all products and merchandise for the Market.

  • Oversees the beer, wine and other beverage program; including development and implementation of a well-curated beer and wine product offering, and a coffee, tea and non-alcoholic beverage program that is both dynamic and in keeping with the core values and mission of Philo Ridge Farm. Works with the Market Manager and FOH team to oversee bar inventory and supply orders.

  • Oversees all day to day Farm Commons Barn food and beverage operations, including the supervision of all service stations and staff, dining room, market and kitchen operations, coordination all opening and closing duties, and coordination of Manager on Duty coverage for all shifts.

  • Oversees and supports the Events Manager, with all Special Events planning and execution, including the scheduling and booking of events, event staffing, and coordinating food, beverage and service style with the Head Chef and Market Manager.

  • Responsible for the oversight and maintenance of all Farm Commons Barn facilities and equipment, including all kitchen equipment, the point of sale system, espresso/coffee equipment, beverage dispensing system, refrigeration units, and ice machine; and the Market, Dining Room and FOH staging areas in the Farm Commons Barn.

  • The Food & Beverage Manager will be responsible for all food and beverage related administrative processes

  • Responsible for all POS and cash handling administration, including the beginning and end of shift POS cash handling and deposit preparation, cash safe and accurate cash control systems, all end of month merchant processing and cash deposit account reconciliation with support from the Accounting team.

  • Responsible for all inventory processes related to product and merchandise including: POS database maintenance, new product receiving and discontinuing of old product, invoice coding and approval, and counting and reconciling all end of month inventory.

  • With the support of the Head Chef and Market Manager, maintain all FOH and BOH employee records, including performance evaluations, disciplinary write-ups, hours worked, time off.

  • Support the Market Manger and Head Chef in the training of all BOH and FOH employees on safety procedures, practice and enforce safe work behaviors and support the Head Chef and Market Manager in the development and implementation of a safety and sanitation program (including Illness and Injury prevention program meetings, safety meetings, updates, etc.) in compliance with the Vermont Department of Health and OSHA safety regulations.

  • Schedule and monitor labor in an efficient, productive and profitable manner, including managing FOH and BOH employee hours, approving and submitting to payroll.

  • The Food & Beverage Manager will work collaboratively with the Market Manager and the Head Chef on the all food and beverage sales, budgets, and financials

  • Manage COGS, prime costs, and expense percentages to budget.

  • Manages and meets financial objectives by forecasting requirements; preparing an annual budget; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.

  • The Food & Beverage Manager will be responsible for other additional tasks and responsibilities as needed


Position Requirements

  • 5-10 years of Market and/or Restaurant General Manager level experience.

  • Proven ability to hire, develop and motivate team members.

  • Ability to effectively direct staff in a fast-paced environment, adapt to changing priorities and remain focused and calm under pressure.

  • Have both front and back of the house skills, industry knowledge and on top of current food and beverage trends.

  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Previous professional experience and/or strong interest in farming and ranching operations.

  • Proven ability to build and cultivate strong, positive relationships with guests, vendors, and team members.

  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office products, POS systems, ChefTec or equivalent food costing software.

  • Demonstrated skills in accounting and cash handling, cost control, and financial analysis.

  • Solid foundation of knowledge in food and market product, cooking, beer and wine, as well as beverage food pairing.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college preferred.

  • Have a working knowledge of local liquor laws, health and safety standards and employee on the job injury reporting requirements.

  • Physical and environmental requirements: continuous standing and occasional carrying of heavy loads; occasional environmental exposure to cold, heat and water.

  • Must have valid Vermont Liquor Card, or obtain one prior to when we obtain our liquor sale permit.

  • Valid drivers license.

  • Minimum of two professional references.


Compensation will be commensurate with experience
